Jessie Bartz Artz
Black Eyed Kid #4
Made from vintage German dolls from the 1920s.
This piece was really fun to make. A friend gave me a few vintage doll pieces & I just loved this one's face. I blacked out the eyes, took more pieces away from the broken skull, and set it down into the cutting board mold.
I use cutting board molds because they have a hole at the top for hanging, and allow for plenty of space for the piece.
Once I laid the head into the mold, I knew I wanted to add extra broken pieces and have a confetti effect. I started by pouring clear resin into the middle. Then I made a confetti glitter resin with multiple colors of gold leaf and poured that around the outside. It all started to push toward the center, which gave it a fireworks look. Then after it had cured, I added two real dried pressed daisies - one on each side of the doll's face.
To me, this piece is a celebration - that even when childhood (or adulthood!) is hard, there is still a lot of color and vibrance all around us. There's a reason she has a slight smile on her face - she endures!
This BEK sticks out from the wall like its coming at you, and I think it turned out perfectly.
In fact, the friend who gave me the dolls bought the piece for their home! I call her Dolly, and she's the piece my logo was based on.
First I placed the head into the mold, broke apart some of the head and placed the pieces around it
Then I put multi-colored leaf (like gold leaf) around the outside of the piece
The multi-colored leaf traveled inward and I added pressed flowers
