Black Eyed Kid #1

This mixed media piece includes vintage Life Magazine clippings, real flowers, and was made into a wall hanging with resin.

This piece is dedicated to latch key kids, children of single parents & children of poverty, who much like the Black Eyed Kids, often have to invite themselves into other people's homes. Sometimes when parents have to work late, their kids have to call all of their friends and ask if they can come over to play, or stay the night. The parent is doing their best to survive in a capitalist country that keeps the lower and middle classes down. The child has to bear the shame of requesting free babysitting on behalf of the parent. The child has to get rejected over and over. The child has to see the look of pity in the eyes of all their friends' parents. The families who allow the child to come into their homes is in danger - of a lonely child falling in love with their security and warmth (and all the food!), of that child wanting to stay with them forever.
